The Mighty Diamonds are coming. Enjoy this recent concert review:
“By then, The Point was filling up to almost bursting point, anyone looking in through the windows would only have been able to see a multitude of bodies, packed into the dance hall, all swaying to the music as the Mighty Diamonds backing group came out and played a few numbers for us, teasing us with a hint of what was to come. Suddenly, these three mighty men exploded onto the stage to a welcome that not too many bands could boast about in the past – people everywhere were shouting, stamping their feet, whistling and screaming their Welsh welcome to the Mighty Diamonds ! I don’t know about diamonds being a girl’s best friend, these men were welcomed by everyone !

Tabby, Bunny and Judge Diamond are all men in their fifties, yet they looked, and performed, like youths ! I was hard put to believe that these were the original band members, they looked like young men with but just a sprinkling of grey hair to give a hint of age and experience !

I felt the floorboards trembling under my feet with each beat of the drums, like a giants heartbeat being thrust through my body, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up when they sang Africa. The years just melted away, and I was a young girl again, and for that I silently nodded my gratitude to those three giants on the stage. Shame and Pride, Weeping and Wailing, The Right Time, I need a roof, Natural Natty, Pass the Koutchie, Why me black brother, why ? – each one performed as though it was for the first time, sung from the souls of these men who once sang on street corners because they had nothing else to do with their time. Never, ever, will the Mighty Diamonds have to sing on street corners again.

If you just sat and watched the band, you could see that what inspired their energy and their dedication, their strength and integrity, their total enjoyment of being on stage was the reaction they had from the crowd. No lack-lustre group of teenagers, no middle-aged singles just out for a drink. No elderly gents who had just popped in for a quick look, here you had a thundering crowd of all ages, music lovers, reggae lovers, all come together under one roof, moving as one to the sound of the sixties, the seventies, and the sound of all eternity – reggae. You don’t just hear reggae, you don’t just listen to reggae. You taste reggae, you feel reggae, reggae takes you over, it becomes part of you, forever. The Mighty Diamonds finally left the stage to the cheers, claps, whistles and shouts of what felt like thousands, all trying, in whatever way possible to show their appreciation to the band for probably what was one of the best evenings they had had in many years. It was hard to let them go, but after a few encores, the lights dimmed, and the stage went quiet. But only for a short while. Tabby, Bunny and Judge Diamond are back home now, riding on the crest of the wave that will be the success of their new album, just released in France. BUT, they will be back. They WILL be back.

Once again, thanks to the Mighty Diamonds for reminding us who and what we are, brothers and sisters. ”
