Anyone out there remember Chucky & the Cyclones? Back in the ‘80s this rockabilly cover band was the incubator for singer/song writer/guitarist Chuck Hughes and bassist, Lance Bakemeyer. In 1993 they decided to form an all-original rockabilly band, the Hillbilly Hellcats. Chuck explains: “We were unable to find a satisfactory local drummer, so a friend introduced us to Taz Bentley, original drummer for Rev. Horton Heat, who played the style we were looking for. Taz recorded two CDs with us. We used various drummers for local and touring shows. We toured the U.S. between 1996-1999.” Since Chuck was unable to find touring players in Colorado, he moved back to L.A. in 2004 and spent 3 ½ years there, in Hollywood, attending the Musicians Institute. But he was still unable to find members willing to tour. Finally in April, 2008 (back in Denver now), he posted MySpace bulletins for touring players, and now he flies them to and from Denver for each tour. "I don’t always have the same bassist and drummer – it depends on who is able to make it.
